Information for you who seek medical assistance during your stay in Norway

Bring along necessary documentation.
When you, as a foreign national or Norwegian citizen residing abroad, need medical assistance during your visit to Norway, you are regarded as a self-paying patient, and you will receive an invoice after your consultation(s) at the hospital.
If you are from a country with a Convention Agreement (EU, EEA and Switzerland) and have the necessary documentation, you can avoid getting an invoice for the entire treatment. You will only have to pay the user fee.
If you cannot access your documentation during your stay, you can send copies to regnskap@lds.no after returning home.
The Following Documentation MUST be produced
Patients from Scandinavia (Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden):
- Health Insurance Card, passport, or Bank ID.
- Permanent address in the country of origin
- Any documentation of voluntary membership in the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme, if applicable.
Patients residing outside EU/EEA countries:
- Passport and residential address in the home country.
- Insurance certificate/papers with the address of the insurance company
Patients from EU/EEA countries and Switzerland
- Health Insurance Card and passport or Bank ID.
If you do not have a Health Insurance Card, you or your relatives can contact the health authorities in your home country and request an emergency form/Provisional Replacement Certificate for your stay at the hospital. - Passport and residential address in your home country.
- Insurance certificate/papers with the address of the insurance company
- If you work in Norway and have Certificate S1, you have the same health rights within the public health service as Norwegian citizens.
- Documentation of voluntary membership in the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme
Patients from Great Britain
- Passport and British Health Insurance Card
- Residential address in your home country.
- Insurance certificate/papers with the address of the insurance company
- If you work in Norway and have Certificate S1, you are entitled to the same health rights within the public health service as Norwegian citizens.
- Documentation of voluntary membership in the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme
Patients from Australia
- Passport
- Residential Address
- Australian Medicard
- Insurance certificate/papers with the address of the insurance company
Patients from Quebec
- Passport
- Residential address
- Insurance certificate/papers with the address of the insurance company
Patients with refugee status
Confirmation of application for asylum
Norwegian citizens residing abroad
- Documentation of voluntary membership in the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme
- Passport
- Health Insurance Card from the country you live in.
