Next of kin
Family members and loved ones usually play an important role in the life of someone with a psychiatric disorder. In this video, you will find more information about how family members can contribute, what rights they have, and where they can turn for support and help.
At the bottom of the page, you will find links to more information about the support services for family members at Senter for psykisk helse og rus.
Summary:
- You have a say in how much your close family members should be involved in your contact with the hospital.
- Many family members can provide valuable information during the assessment and treatment process.
- Family members have the right to general information from the hospital, regardless of whether they are directly involved in the treatment process. However, therapists cannot provide specific details about you and your treatment without your consent.
- Family members may need support and assistance to be a good resource for the person who is ill. There are therefore specific services for next of kin, both at the hospital and through family member organizations. These services are free of charge and do not require a referral.
- If a family member is concerned about their own mental health, it is recommended that they contact their general practitioner (fastlege) for help in assessing the situation.
